My name is Joshua Russell, and I currently serve as a captain and K9 commander at Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs. I have been with MCCF for nearly a year.
Prior to joining MCCF, I worked as a heavy equipment operator and trainer, and I also served my local police department as a part-time law enforcement officer. These experiences helped prepare me for the leadership, training, and operational responsibilities I now carry in my current role.
As K9 commander, I oversee all K9 operations within the facility. My responsibilities include training and maintaining the readiness of K9 teams, conducting searches for contraband, and ensuring the proper handling and care of the K9s. I also supervise K9 handlers, maintain training and certification records, develop training protocols, and assist with overall facility security operations.
I was looking for a career that offered strong benefits, opportunities for advancement, and allowed me to utilize my knowledge and passion for K9s, and I found that at MCCF. This position has given me the opportunity to grow professionally while continuing to build my knowledge and skills.
What truly sets MCCF apart is the people, the environment, and the leadership. It has become like a second family to me. Not many places you work are places you actually look forward to going each day, but MCCF is one of those places. The teamwork, support from leadership, and shared sense of purpose make a difference every day. Working with MDOC at MCCF offers stability, competitive benefits, and real opportunities for advancement for anyone looking to build a long-term career.
