My name is Derrick Chambers, and I serve as the director of Private and Regional Facilities and Joint County State Work Programs for the Mississippi Department of Corrections. With over a decade of progressive leadership experience, I have worked to build a reputation as a result driven correctional professional committed to safety, accountability, and meaningful rehabilitation.

I began my career as a correctional officer at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as lieutenant, correctional commander, warden of the Youthful Offender Unit, chief of security, and superintendent of one of the state’s largest correctional institution. Throughout my career, my leadership has been defined by a hands-on approach, operational discipline, and a deep commitment to both staff and those in our custody.

As director, I oversee a complex network of facilities, including 15 regional correctional facilities, two private prisons, and 41 county work programs across Mississippi. In this role, I ensure compliance with state laws, contractual standards, and national accreditation requirements while driving initiatives that enhance institutional safety, improve operational performance, and strengthen rehabilitative programming.

I am a strong advocate for accountability at every level. I believe that structure, consistency, and leadership presence are essential to maintaining secure and effective correctional environments. At the same time, I remain equally committed to the belief that individuals in custody deserve access to quality food, medical care, education, and opportunities for personal growth.

As a selected auditor for the American Correctional Association (ACA), I bring a high level of focus to institutional compliance, inspections, and operational standards. I also value the opportunity to work alongside our partners across the state, assisting county leadership and helping strengthen workforce programs that prepare individuals for reentry.

I believe that correctional leadership is not just about maintaining order but about creating environments where change is possible. My career reflects a balance of firm accountability and forward-thinking leadership, focused on preparing individuals for successful reentry while supporting the professionals who serve on the front lines every day.
