State Inmate Captured in Ocean Springs

JACKSON – Escaped state inmate Michael Floyd Wilson is back in custody.

Wilson, MDOC #29893, was arrested without incident after 6 p.m. Saturday in Ocean Springs, ending a 53-hour manhunt. He had escaped the South Mississippi Correctional Institution (SMCI) in Leakesville on Thursday.

Commissioner Pelicia E. Hall credited participating law enforcement officers in the search and apprehension of Wilson.

"I commend all MDOC officers and thank all of the other state, federal, county, and local law enforcement agencies for their work and diligence in bringing this situation to a successful resolution," Commissioner Hall said. "It was a joint effort to get a dangerous felon back into custody without anyone getting hurt."

Meanwhile, the lockdown at SMCI remains in effect.

Wilson, 47, was discovered missing at 12:48 p.m. at the south Mississippi prison. He is serving two life sentences for murder in Harrison County. He was sentenced Sept. 2, 2015.

In addition to the MDOC, other participating agencies include the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Ocean Springs Police Department, D’Iberville Police Department, Gulfport Police Department, Biloxi Police Department, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force.
